Understanding Leverage: Power and Risk

2 min read By Fidorix Editorial Team

Leverage is the mechanism that allows you to control a large notional position with a relatively small deposit. If a broker offers 1:100 leverage, you can open a $10,000 position by putting up only $100 as margin. This is the fundamental reason forex is accessible to retail traders who do not have millions in capital — but it is also the reason accounts can be depleted in minutes if leverage is misused.

The math worth internalising

The mathematics are straightforward and worth internalising. With 1:100 leverage, a 1% move in the market in your favour doubles your margin. The same 1% move against you wipes it out entirely. At 1:200, a 0.5% adverse move eliminates your stake. Because currency pairs regularly move 0.5–1.5% in a single session, high leverage combined with no stop-loss is essentially a coin flip on total account loss. Before opening any position, run the numbers through our margin calculator so you know exactly how much of your balance a trade ties up.

Treat the ratio as a ceiling

Responsible leverage use starts with treating the leverage ratio as a ceiling, not a target. Fidorix offers leverage up to 1:2000 depending on your equity tier, but most professional traders — even those who have access to high leverage — rarely exceed 5:1 to 10:1 effective exposure on any given trade. The effective leverage on a trade is your position size divided by your account equity. Keeping that number low, regardless of what the broker allows, is a hallmark of long-term survival in the market.

Start small on Fidorix

As a new trader on Fidorix, consider starting with the minimum position sizes on a Classic account from $10 and gradually increasing only as your strategy proves profitable over at least three to six months of results. Treat each trade as a test of your process rather than an opportunity to get rich quickly, and leverage will become a precision tool rather than a liability.
